The Christmas story should not have been a surprise to anybody as prophets had been telling of the coming of the Messiah for centuries. Hundreds of years had come and gone and still no Messiah, so nobody was looking anymore for the Messiah to come when He did. The same attitude exists today as Jesus promised centuries ago that He was coming back but since He hasn't, nobody is looking for Him in their life time. Look at some of the details of the fulfilled prophecies of the Messiah.
