In the military and some colleges, rewards and punishments are determined by the "merit" system. Do what you are supposed to and merits are earned. Demerits come when you don't do what you are supposed to do or you do what you are not supposed to and punishement comes. These are added to your permanent record as well. For some reason people think God's Grace operates like this.
