Summary
What is the authoritative source of our faith?
At time of Reformation (500 years ago), the Bible was in Latin and the Church was the only ones to tell you what it says.
1. Faith alone. Martin Luther's struggle with feeling unforgiven and fear of death. At 21 he entered a monastery. He had a doctorate in theology by the age of 29. Rom 1: 17 - by faith. God gives us Righteousness through faith alone.
2. Scripture alone. The Church raised indulgences so people could pay to get people out of purgatory. Luther challenged this, and his main argument was to say the Scripture is the basis of faith.
3. Here I stand. Luther declared the Pope and the Church could err. This was heresy in Luther's day. He was excommunicated from the Church. In April, 1521 the Diet of Worms where Luther had to answer two questions.
