Unrepentance in the Church
Summary
Common idea today of what we do in private is no one else's business.
1. The sin - (a) The man's sin (v1) - even the pagans knew this was going too far. Ongoing thing, and he refused to repent of it. (b) The Church's sin (v2) - you are proud (in the super spirituality - they had arrived). But instead they should (v3) be repentant. At the heart of any Church is love - getting to know each other - like family - 'warts and all'. We have a responsibility for each other.
2. Unrepentant sin in the Church. Very destructive. We are connected in Christ. The image of 'bread'. Yeast (leaven) helps it to rise. First Passover (in time of Moses) - bread was unleavened - as a sign of leaving Egypt and its ways. V7 - get rid of the old life style. It matters how we live. Warning - 3:16 - we are God's temple.
3. A time to judge. Responsible for discipline (v3-5). Start treating this man as a sinner (v5 'hand over to Satan') - so that he will be saved. He has to choose between sin or life. Act as a Church. We still have to live in the world (v9-10) - but it is different when a fellow Christian is immoral. We cannot always trust our conscience - we need the collective conscience of the Church.
