How are we saved?
Summary
Often assume we know 'how are we saved'.
1. The problem. Acts 15. The church is now large, many were Gentiles, and this posed a problem for some Jews. (v1). Problem (v5). Some wanted Gentiles to first become Jews before becoming a Christian. One thing to have things we value, but another thing to say we can't be a Christian without those things.
2. How are we saved? By the grace of God by trusting in Jesus death and resurrection for us. (v9-11). No one is ever born a Christian - individual faith is required. But nothing more is required. ('Yokes' - v10) Colossians 2:6.
3. The four requirements. V28,29. Seems a contradiction, but these things are not essential to salvation. It is about fellowship. The 4 things were bound up with heathen temple practices, but these would be a problem to the Jews. The leaders are saying, 'consider the other people'. Salvation produces concern for other Christians - 'its not about me'.
4. What about if we do disagree? Primary question - is Salvation at stake, and if so we need to search the Bible for the answer. If not a Salvation issue - just take a breath and relax - we are free to differ. (even Paul and Barnabas had a disagreement). Don't make a secondary issue into a primary issue.
