When the Gospel offends
Summary
Sometimes our good attempts can fail.
1. The offence of the Gospel. (v16ff). Paul troubled by the poor girl, he had to respond. Owners reaction (v19) - outraged - shrewd enough to make other accusations (Jews, and against Roman law) - first account of Gentile opposition. When Gospel get close and impacts, that is when they react, and not always rationally.
2. Responding to Gospel opposition. Should we fight back (Look how they were treated - v22-24). Paul and Silas' reaction (v25). The earthquake. They treat the jailer with mercy. To live the Gospel means two things (a) acknowledge our faults, (b) forgive others their faults.
3. The impact of Gospel shaped lives. (v30). The jailer realised he was not in control. They showed him grace. Philippians 1:12. God works in us to adorn the Gospel. Sometimes hard (Paul in cell singing and praying). Matthew 5:16.
