Gospel Growth
Summary
What do we need to live? What is needed to make the Gospel spread?
1. Prayer (v1,2). Prays that the Gospel would spread rapidly everywhere, and the message be honoured. Honouring is hearing and trusting. Paul also asks (v2) for protection from faithless people. (see Acts 17). Paul also prays for them (v3-5) that they will know God's love, faithfulness and protect them. The Christian life is like a 'long slow bush walk' rather than a '100 meter dash'. Reflect on Christ's perseverance. What does this look like for now: Many places still need to Gospel, or people under persecution - they need our prayer. The Christian life is easier when we do it together, and helps us persevere.
2. Idle worshippers (v6-15). Some were not pulling their weight. They were disruptive and having a negative effect by being idle (people who could work, but choose not too). If these lazy people will not respond Paul says (a) Keep away from them (v6,14), and warn them (v15). (b) Keep doing what is good (v13) - don't let their bad behaviour change you. How are we working together as a Church. Some examples (a) Mentoring (b) Students - use of holiday times (c) opportunities to those who are stretched. (d) using our money and riches.
