Church is where we meet together to meet God, and grow together.
1. Build the Church with plain speech.
(a) The gift of tongues. This was a problem at Corinth. God's gift, but only indirectly benefits people. What is tongues (v2, 13-17) - all benefits the speaker (v4), can strengthen the speaker so they can then help the church. Directly, it alienates the Church. (v11).
(b) The gift of Prophecy. This directly helps the church (v3,4), and is encouraged. Again, no definition (must always be in line with the Bible). Not new revelation. Possibly, applying the Word of God to local situations. Effect (v3).
Implications - if anyone speaks in Church in tongues, then need an interpreter. Preacher to speak clearly, and relevant music.
2. We need to consider outsiders in Church (public meetings). The Corinthians did not think what an outsider felt (v23). Maybe they thought an outsider would be impressed by tongues - but it really shuts people out. Prophecy (plain speech) is a lot more beneficial (v24,25).
3. Our minds must be engaged in all we do. (v15-17). God does not by-pass our minds and our brains must not be switched off. (Romans 12:1). May mean are minds are cleared before we arrive at Church so we can give full attention.
