What about the Law and Prophets?
Summary
How does the new teaching of Jesus fit with the old Jewish teaching?
1. Jesus comes to fulfil the law. He did not come to get rid of the law and the Prophets. He brings the Old Testament to its intended meaning - he adds colour to the OT outline drawing. He treats the OT as God's word.
2. Jesus is the answer to the OT problem of sin. The law exposes our sinful heart. Our heart's desire is so far from God.
3. Let us not forget the commands of God. ('break' means loosening, set aside, rubbing out what we don't like, and even teaching others to break it). How can we exceed the righteousness of the Pharisees? It is not through external legal correctness (as with the Pharisees), but our hearts need to be cleansed by Jesus.
